College/Department Information

Established in the summer of 2002, the Center for Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine (CBGM) at the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) at Augusta University (AU) was developed to promote interdisciplinary and translational research in Biotechnology and Genomic Medicine with the ultimate goal of promoting predictive, preventive, personalized and participatory (4P) medicine. The Center's research efforts focus on two main areas: Discovery and validation of biomarkers for disease prediction and diagnosis; Pharmacomics and drug discovery for personalized medicine. CBGM is home of four internationally renowned programs in diabetes research: The Environmental Determinants of Diabetes in the Young, the Prospective Assessment in Newborns of Diabetes Autoimmunity, the Diabetic Complications Consortium, and the Mouse Metabolic Phenotype Consortium. Additional research programs include autoimmune diseases, transplantation, and cancer. These research programs are supported by an annual extramural funding of approximately $12 million. The center houses several state-of-the-art high throughput and high content facilities for genetics, genomics, proteomics, drug screening and bioinformatics.

Job Summary

Performs laboratory work related to studies in heart disease. Maintains research databases, communicates well with other laboratory members, and works well as part of a team. Assists with ordering supplies and maintaining a safe and organized laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

The duties include, but are not limited to:

EXPERIMENTS: Perform rodent-related experiments. Collect and analyze behavior and cardiac functional data on experimental animal models. Perform animal procedures include tail vein injection and minor surgeries. Collect and analyze animal blood/tissue samples.

ANALYSIS: Analyze and summarize experimental results.

CELL CULTURE: Perform cell culture and molecular biology experiments, including Western Blot, PCR, qPCR, ELISA, protein interaction assays, and immunocytochemistry on cell culture.

OTHER: Any other duties as assigned by P.I.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, cell biology or other natural, life, health care or materials science directly related to the research area to which the position is assigned and experience in research, basic science or a clinical setting particularly clinical trials research and minimum of two years of applicable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Familiar with rodent genetic and disease animal models, primary cell isolation and culture, histology, and immunohistochemistry.

Familiar with mammalian cell culture, molecular cloning, and molecular biology techniques, including Western Blot, PCR, qPCR, and ELISA.

Research experience in cardiovascular diseases and/or cardiac physiology.

Experience in scientific writing and presentation. Has peer-reviewed publication(s).

Familiar with scientific analysis software such as GraphPad.

Shift/Salary/Benefits

Shift: Days; Monday - Friday (Work outside of normal business hours may be required).

Salary Range: $18.85-$23.56 per hour.

Pay Band: B6

Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position.
